Tomb of General Gwon Yul

This is the tomb of General Gwon Yul (1537–1599), a civil official of the mid-Joseon period and also known as Manchwidang. After passing the state examination in the 15th year of King Seonjo's reign (1582), he held various government posts. At the age of 55, he was appointed as the magistrate of Uiju and defended against the northern Jurchen tribes. The tomb area centers on the general's grave, with his first wife, Lady Changnyeong Jo, buried on the left and his second wife, Lady Juksan Park, on the right. In front of the grave are a tombstone, a stone table, an incense burner stone, and a pair of child stone figures, with stone pillars and a pair of civil official stone figures on the left and right. On the hill behind General Gwon Yul's tomb are the graves of his older brother Gwon Sun and his father Gwon Cheol, in that order. The stele at the entrance of the tomb area was re-erected by the general's descendants in 1861 (the 12th year of King Cheoljong's reign) because the original inscription had worn away. It records the general's life story and information about his descendants. The ritual house below the tomb, used for managing the tomb and preparing ancestral rites, is not open to the public. It takes about 10 minutes by car from Songchu IC. Nearby attractions include Jangheung Tourist Complex (Cheongam Folk Museum, Gana Art Center, Duri Land, Yangju City Jang Uk-jin Museum of Art, Yangju City Min Bok-jin Museum of Art, Songam Space Center, Jangheung Jasaeng Arboretum, etc.), Songchu Resort, Ilyeong Resort, Bukhansan National Park, National ASEAN Natural Recreation Forest, Philux Lighting Museum, and Hoeamsa Temple Site.
