경기도 양주시 장흥면 호국로 255-41

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Located near Jangheung Tourist Site, Yangju Onneung is the tomb of Queen Dangyeong (1487–1557), the first wife of King Jungjong, the 11th monarch of the Joseon Dynasty. She was deposed due to opposition from meritorious subjects after the Jungjong Restoration. The current tomb was newly established in 1739 when she was reinstated as Queen Dangyeong, covering an area of approximately 66,000 pyeong. Designated as Historic Site No. 210, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2009. Visitors can honor Queen Dangyeong's life while enjoying a unique experience of history and nature. Previously closed to the public due to its location within a military protection zone, it has been open since November 2019 thanks to continuous efforts by the Cultural Heritage Administration and Yangju City.

Queen Dangyeong was the daughter of Shin Su-geun and Lady Cheongwon Han. In 1499 (5th year of King Yeonsangun), she married Prince Jinseong, a son of King Seongjong. When Prince Jinseong ascended the throne in 1506 through the Jungjong Restoration, she was crowned queen. However, because her father Shin Su-geun's sister was the queen of King Yeonsangun and he was killed by the restoration faction for opposing the coup, she was deposed after only seven days under pressure from the meritorious subjects.
