Lee Sang's House

Lee Sang's House is the site where the modernist writer Lee Sang (real name Kim Hae-gyeong, 1910–1937) lived from the age of three for about 20 years. This site, which was at risk of demolition, was purchased in 2009 by the National Trust for Cultural Heritage through citizen fundraising and corporate sponsorship, and is now preserved and managed. It was part of Lee Sang's uncle's house, a large 300-pyeong property that originally included the main building, servants' quarters, and a guest annex, but was later divided into 10 lots with hanok houses built on them. This site is a portion of that original land.

Inside, there is a bust and portrait of Lee Sang, and an archive displaying his works chronologically on one wall, allowing visitors to explore his literary pieces. On the left side of the interior, a heavy concrete square door frame is installed, and opening the large black-painted iron door reveals a dark, lightless space with stairs leading to the rooftop. At the end of the low stairs, opening the door to the outside floods the interior with bright light. This symbolic space is highly praised for effectively expressing the dark times and his personal reality, along with a longing for freedom, through spatial design.
