Why travelers stop here
The Sinchang-ri Three-Story Stone Pagoda is a late Goryeo Dynasty stone pagoda restored in 1991 by gathering scattered stone pagoda components from a temple site presumed to be Bongguksa Temple. The pagoda, approximately 2.18 meters high, features a three-story body placed on a two-tiered base. The lower base retains only some components, with corner pillars (uju) and central pillars (tangju) carved on the edges and center of the face stones. The upper base consists of wide stone slabs forming the face stones, with corner pillars carved at the edges without central pillars. The body stones have corner pillars carved on them. During the restoration, a circular reliquary cavity was discovered on the upper surface of the first-story body stone, where relics had been enshrined. The roof stones have four-tiered supports on the underside, reduced from the typical style of Unified Silla stone pagodas, resulting in thinner roof stones and gentler slopes on the water-drip surfaces. The eaves show a very slight upward curve at the corners. The finial part is missing. During the Goryeo Dynasty, as stone pagoda construction increased, single-tiered bases became popular. The fact that the Sinchang-ri Three-Story Stone Pagoda was built with a double-tiered base provides important data for studying Goryeo stone pagodas in the Gyeonggi-do region. Based on the stone-carving techniques of the base stones and the reduced expression of the roof stones, it is presumed to have been made in the late Goryeo period.
