Tomb of Sim On

경기도 수원시 영통구 이의동 산 13-10

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This is the tomb of Sim On (1375–1418), a civil official during the reign of King Taejong of Joseon. His clan was Cheongsong, his courtesy name was Jungok, and his posthumous title was Anhyo. He was the father of King Sejong's queen (gukgu), enfeoffed as Prince Consort Cheongcheon, and rose to the position of Yeonguijeong (Chief State Councilor). In 1418 (the first year of King Sejong's reign), while serving as an envoy to Ming China, he was falsely implicated in the Musul Oksa incident. On his return, he was arrested in Uiju and met his death in Suwon. Later proven innocent, he was reinstated in 1451 (the first year of King Munjong's reign). The tomb area is built in three tiers centered around a gyechaeseok (a flat, long boundary stone dividing the tomb area), preserving the original form of 15th-century tomb construction well. The tombstone in front of the burial mound, in the bangbu gyusu style, bears the posthumous title 'Anhyo,' indicating it was made after 1451. The inscription is written in the Songseolche style popular at the time, strong yet elegant. Based on records in Geunyeok Seohwajing (1928), this calligraphy is presumed to be by Prince Anpyeong (1418–1453), a master of the Songseolche style. The jangmyeongdeung (stone lantern) has an unnatural three-tiered round shape, but its large, open hwachang (lamp chamber) reflects 15th-century characteristics. The munseokin (stone civil official) wears a bokdu (official hat) and a gongbok (court robe), with a grand scale and intense impression, well symbolizing the guardianship of the tomb. The tomb preserves the original form of early Joseon tomb construction, and the tombstone allowing appreciation of Songseolche calligraphy, along with stone artifacts embodying 15th-century artistry, all convey the uniqueness of Gyeonggi region tomb culture, recognized as a valuable cultural heritage.
