Hong Seung-in Historic House

Designated as Gyeonggi-do Cultural Heritage Material, this house well illustrates the traditional residential life of wealthy farmers in the Gyeonggi-do region. It consists of an anchae (inner quarters), sarangchae (men's quarters), and haengnangchae (servants' quarters), forming a square 'ㅁ' shape. The anchae is 'ㄱ'-shaped, with a central wooden floor (daecheongmaru), the main room (anbang) to the east, a room across from it (geonnonbang), and a kitchen in front of the main room. Behind the kitchen is a backyard with a well and a jangdokdae (fermentation jar stand). The sarangchae is also 'ㄱ'-shaped, with one room on each side of a central wooden floor, and lattice doors installed outside the wooden veranda (toenmaru), making the veranda appear like a corridor when viewed from the front of the rooms. The haengnangchae in front of the sarangchae is a straight-line (一字形) structure with nine bays, featuring a raised gate (soseuldaemun) at the center. A notable characteristic of Hong Seung-in's historic house is the long sarangchae's folding doors (bunhapmun) and the elaborate lattice windows (ttisalchang) and side gates (hyeopmun), which are preserved in their original form. Although there is no clear evidence of the construction date, based on the materials and joinery techniques used in the sarangchae, it is estimated to date from the late 19th century, with the anchae believed to be earlier.
