Stone Standing Buddha in Moksinni, Wonsam-myeon

This stone Buddha statue, 1.8m in height, is located in the village of Moksinni, Wonsam-myeon, Yongin-si. It features a large ushnisha (a protuberance on the top of the Buddha's head symbolizing wisdom), a round face, and voluminous shoulders. The heavy expression of the thick monastic robe is a rare example of pre-Goryeo period Buddha statue style in the Gyeonggi-do region. The head has a broad ushnisha, but due to severe wear, the face is difficult to discern, and the three lines on the neck are also unclear. The monastic robe (dharma robe) covers both shoulders, forming a 'Y'-shaped collar at the neck, thick folds on the shoulders, and U-shaped robe folds on the chest. The right hand is raised near the chest with the palm facing outward in the abhaya mudra (gesture of dispelling fear), and the left hand hangs downward with the palm facing outward in the varada mudra (gesture of granting wishes). Overall, the body and robe are richly voluminous, and the statue adopts the ancient hand gestures of abhaya and varada mudras. Although the facial features are difficult to discern due to wear, the cheeks retain a sense of volume and the eye area is slightly recessed, leaving traces of three-dimensional carving. This statue continues the lineage of ancient Buddha statues created around the time of the unification of the Three Kingdoms in areas such as Yeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
