Jipyeong Battle Monument

경기도 양평군 지평면 지평로 357

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The Battle of Jipyeong-ri was a defensive battle in which the U.S. 2nd Division's 23rd Regiment (attached to the French Battalion) repelled a concentrated attack by approximately 50,000 Chinese communist forces, equivalent to three divisions, in the Jipyeong-myeon area from February 13 to 16, 1951. It was the first tactical and operational victory for the UN forces against the Chinese communist forces after their intervention in the war. Following the Battle of Jipyeong-ri, the UN forces began to gain confidence, and it became a crucial turning point for the counteroffensive that later restored the 38th parallel. The Jipyeong Battle Monument was erected on July 15, 1957, by the Republic of Korea Army's 5th Division to commemorate the achievements of the defensive battle against the Chinese communist forces in the Battle of Jipyeong-ri and to honor the spirits of the fallen soldiers. It consists of a flat platform built on granite steps, with a tower erected and protected by a surrounding iron fence. Right next to the monument is the Jipyeong Uibyeong and Jipyeong-ri Battle Memorial Hall, where visitors can reflect on the spirit of the righteous army (uibyeong) and the spirit of sacrifice during the Jipyeong Uibyeong activities and the Battle of Jipyeong-ri.
