Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This mountain is famous as a destination for silver grass hiking in autumn. Located 84 km northeast of Seoul and about 7 km from Uncheon, Myeongseongsan (922.6m) embraces Sanjeongho Lake at its base, allowing visitors to enjoy both hiking and the lake's ambiance. There is a legend that the sorrows of Gung Ye, who founded the Taebong Kingdom, are hidden in the majestic Myeongseongsan, which spreads like a folding screen behind the lake. One story says that when he wept over the grief of his fallen kingdom, the mountain also wept; another legend says that a loyal subject and his horse, having lost their master to Wang Geon's retainer, cried so loudly that the mountain echoed, leading to the name 'Ureumsan' (Crying Mountain), which later became Myeongseongsan using the Chinese characters for 'cry' (myeong) and 'sound' (seong).

At some point, the spectacular silver grass flowers beyond the mountain ridge became known to hikers. Accordingly, from 1997, the Sanjeongho Lake Myeongseongsan Silver Grass Festival began to be held from late September to early October. With the full-scale development of hiking trails in connection with the Sanjeongho Lake tourist area, it has become a popular hiking course favored by professional mountaineers, beginners, and people of all ages and genders. From the summit, you can see Oseongsan to the north, Sanghaebong and Daeseongsan, Baegamsan to the northeast, Gwangdeoksan to the east, and Baegunsan and Gukmangbong to the southeast.
