Boeoksa Temple (Osan)

According to Yongjusa Temple's branch temple records, Boeoksa Temple originally had the Yakasa-jeon Hall, enshrining the Medicine Buddha (Yaksa-yeorae) who is believed to cure illnesses, extend life, eliminate disasters, satisfy clothing and food needs for sentient beings of the world, and help them attain the truth of supreme enlightenment through practicing Buddha's teachings. The temple shared a long history with Doksanseong Fortress. However, in 1990, during the Buddhist service led by Monk Dogwangjeongun, a newly built main hall with three front bays and two side bays, enshrining Sakyamuni Buddha, was constructed, and its name was changed to Daeungjeon, which remains to this day.

Boeoksa Temple is located in front of the east gate at the lower summit of Doksanseong Fortress, an ancient fortress of Baekje. It is known to have been founded after the construction of Doksanseong Fortress during the Three Kingdoms period, at the current site within the fortress, to pray for victory, and has undergone several reconstructions due to wars. The name Boeoksa originated from a legend: during the Baekje period, an elderly couple, struggling to survive the barley hump season with only two scoops of rice left, decided to offer the rice to the Buddha rather than starve. After making the offering, they returned home to find their rice storage full of rice. Thus, the temple was named Boeoksa, meaning a temple where treasures accumulate through devoted offerings and miraculous power.
