January 21 Armed Guerrilla Infiltration Route

경기도 연천군 장남면 반정리 294

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Located 3.5km southwest of Gorangpo, the Armed Guerrilla Infiltration Route is the site where 31 members of North Korea's 124th Army Unit, including Kim Shin-jo, crossed the Southern Limit Line at 23:00 on January 17, 1968. North Korea attempted to infiltrate these armed guerrillas, including Kim Shin-jo, into Seoul on January 21, 1968, to blow up the presidential residence (Cheong Wa Dae), assassinate key figures, and destroy major government facilities. However, at around 21:00 on January 19, 1968, a woodcutter living in Beopwon-ri, Paju-si reported this, leading to a joint military-police operation to eliminate the armed guerrillas from January 20 to January 30, 1968. The operation resulted in 29 casualties, 1 escapee, and 1 capture (Kim Shin-jo), but our military and police also suffered significant losses.

Currently, at the Armed Guerrilla Infiltration Route, a model of the armed guerrillas who infiltrated by breaking through the border fence and barbed wire installed by the U.S. 2nd Division's perimeter defense unit stationed here at that time is displayed. The responsible military unit partially eased access control to the area north of the Civilian Control Line as of October 1, 1999, allowing visits by prior application.
