Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Jeongchungmyo Shrine, located in Chowol-eup, Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do, is a shrine dedicated to five generals who died in battle at Ssangnyeong-ri during the Manchu invasion of 1636 (Byeongja Horan). At that time, the loyalist troops from Yeongnam advancing northward to rescue King Injo, who had taken refuge in Namhansanseong Fortress, were preemptively attacked by Qing forces here, and many soldiers and generals perished. The shrine enshrines four spirit tablets: Heo Wan, the Left Gyeongsang Province Military Commander; Min Yong, the Right Gyeongsang Province Military Commander; Seon Segang, the Andong Garrison Commander; and Lee Ui-bae, the Lord of Jukseoksanseong Fortress. Currently, an annual ritual is held in the first month of the lunar calendar, organized by the Gwangju Cultural Center.
