Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Located at the foot of Wausan Mountain in Mapo-gu, Gwangheungdang is a hanok cultural space to the right of the King Gongmin Shrine, operating various programs to raise awareness of the value of traditional culture. It runs educational programs for youth and the excavation and exhibition of local historical materials of Mapo-gu. On Daeboreum (the Great Full Moon), it holds Daeboreum games, kite flying, jisinbalgi (stomping the ground), seokjeon (stone battle), and cheoksa (archery) contests, which reflect pre-modern customs and lifestyles passed down among the people. On Coming-of-Age Day, a traditional coming-of-age ceremony is held, and diverse events such as a traditional Korean music festival and Mapo Gugak Ullim performances are conducted to promote Korean traditional music. Additionally, the King Gongmin Shrine ritual has been developed into a community harmony and festival event, and paid cultural classes such as janggu (drum) class, pansori, and gukseondo (traditional martial art) are offered.
