Gahoe-dong Catholic Church

서울특별시 종로구 북촌로 57 (가회동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The Bukchon area where Gahoe-dong Catholic Church is located is the region where the first missionary, Father James Zhou Wenmo (주문모, 야고보), secretly entered Joseon and celebrated the 'first Mass' on Korean soil on April 5, 1795, Easter Sunday, at the home of Matthias Choi In-gil (최인길, 마티아). The parish jurisdiction is the area where Father Zhou Wenmo hid in the home of Columba Kang Wan-suk (강완숙, 골롬바) while carrying out pastoral activities, holding great significance in Korean church history.

The parish was officially established in 1949, and the church building was completed in 1954. However, due to the aging of the church, the old building was demolished starting in 2011 to construct the current new church. It was completed on November 21, 2013, and the congregation moved in and held the move-in Mass three days later on November 24 (Feast of Christ the King). The new church, blending Eastern and Western architectural styles, was consecrated on April 20, 2014, Easter Sunday, by Cardinal Yeom Soo-jung, Archbishop of Seoul, to revive the history of the past.
