Why travelers stop here
Sungkyunkwan, a representative educational institution of the Joseon Dynasty, served both as a school and a shrine. The highest academic hall where Sungkyunkwan students studied and researched, and even educated the crown prince, was called Myeongnyundang, which means 'to illuminate the ethics of human society.' In the front yard of Myeongnyundang stands a giant ginkgo tree, designated as Natural Monument No. 59, which is over 400 years old. The beautiful scenery of the ginkgo tree in its yellow autumn colors has made it a popular attraction visited by many people.
