Why travelers stop here
Opened in July 2021 in Anguk-dong, Jongno-gu, the Seoul Museum of Craft Art is Korea's first public craft museum, remodeled by Seoul City from five buildings of the former Pungmoon Girls' High School. The museum aims to be a dynamic platform where visitors can experience the technical, practical, artistic, and cultural values of crafts by researching and sharing not only craft objects but also the knowledge, records, people, and environment surrounding crafts. The Seoul Museum of Craft Art collects and holds over 20,000 craft items and materials spanning various eras and fields from traditional to contemporary, and is preparing diverse exhibitions, programs, materials, and systems including craft history exhibitions, contemporary craft exhibitions, local craft exhibitions, children's craft exhibitions, a craft archive, a craft library, a craft resource management system, and a craft installation project. The site of the Seoul Museum of Craft Art has a long history as a place used as a royal residence or related to royal ceremonies, such as the house of Prince Yeongeung, a son of King Sejong, and the Anguk-dong Byeolgung (Annex Palace) built for the wedding of King Sunjong. It is also the central area of Jongno-gu where Joseon's artisans 'Gyeonggongjang' (京工匠), who produced handicrafts for government supply, once existed, and is adjacent to Bukchon, Insa-dong, and Gyeongbokgung Palace, offering diverse cultural experiences.
