Gaksibawi Oreum

제주특별자치도 서귀포시 호근동 2124

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

A parasitic volcano with an elevation of 395m, its crater is conical in shape. It is called Gaksibau Oreum after the Gaksibawi (Bride Rock) at the summit. It is also referred to as Gaksuak in Chinese characters, or Haksuak because it resembles the flapping of a crane's wings. The northern slope of the oreum is gentle and densely forested, while the southern ridge is very steep. The southern ridge appears to have three ridges extending outward. There is a hiking trail that ascends behind Yeongsansa Temple just below the southern slope, and the trachyte rocks along the path have unique shapes and colors. The name Gaksibawi originates from a tale of a virtuous woman (yeolnyeo) who fell from this rock to her death. The summit offers a view of the sea off Seogwipo, and due to the beautiful surrounding scenery, it has been a place where scholars enjoyed leisure and arts since ancient times. Nearby attractions include Seogwipo Healing Forest, Eongtto Falls, and Gogeunsan.
