Gangneung Haeunjeong Pavilion

It is said to have been built in 1530 when Scholar Sim Eon-gwang was the governor of Gangwon Province. The pavilion's hanging board, Haeunjeong (海雲亭), was written by Song Si-yeol, and the inscription was composed by Kwon Jin-eung. Additionally, poetry boards by various notable figures including Yulgok are preserved here. The overall form of Haeunjeong follows the framework of a nobleman's house, but the composition of the storage room and the style of the wooden floor strongly reflect the expression of a commoner's house. In the Gangneung area, many detached pavilion-type buildings are distributed, and Haeunjeong is a wooden structure belonging to the detached pavilion style of upper-class Joseon houses. It is the oldest building in the Gangneung area after Ojukheon. Designated as a Treasure on January 21, 1963, Haeunjeong is a single-story hip-and-gable roof house with 3 kan (bays) at the front and 2 kan at the sides. Among the 3 front bays, the right 2 bays consist of a wooden-floored hall, and the left 1 bay is an ondol room. Haeunjeong is a detached wooden pavilion located on the west shore of Gyeongpo Lake, said to have been built in 1530 when Scholar Sim Eon-gwang was the governor of Gangwon Province.
