Why travelers stop here
Hyanggyo is a national educational institution established to hold ancestral rites for Confucius and other sages, and to educate and enlighten local residents. During the Joseon Dynasty, it received land and slaves from the state, and instructors taught students. However, with the Gabo Reform of 1894, modern education was fully implemented, and its educational function was abolished.
The existing buildings include Daeseongjeon, Myeongnyundang, Naesammun, Oesammun, and Jaesil. Inside Daeseongjeon, memorial tablets for the Five Sages, the Four Masters of the Song Dynasty, and the 18 Sages of Korea are enshrined. The exact construction date is unknown, but based on records that Yun Tak encouraged planting a ginkgo tree at Daeseongjeon and the estimated age of the ginkgo tree, it is presumed to have been built in the early Joseon period, around the 1400s.
