Banghyeongbun Tomb in Gujeong-dong, Gyeongju

경상북도 경주시 불국로 15-5 (구정동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This is the only square-shaped tomb (banghyeongbun) from the Unified Silla period, providing valuable archaeological data on the lineage of similar-style tombs from the Goryeo period. Located on flat land at the southern end of Daedeoksan Mountain, about 9 km from downtown Gyeongju, it is called 'Banghyeongbun' due to its square shape. The tomb has a passageway to the south and is a stone chamber tomb with double-leaf stone doors. The burial mound measures 9 meters on each side and is 2.7 meters high. Inside, to the west of the chamber, there is a stone pedestal that once held the body and coffin. The lower outer edge is surrounded by trimmed protective stones (hoseok), and the twelve zodiac animal figures are carved according to direction. Stone pillars erected at the corners feature relief carvings of warrior figures and lion figures, which have been moved to the National Gyeongju Museum for display. Although the identity of the buried person is unknown, this square tomb from the Unified Silla period is unique.

* Hoseok (protective stones) Broken stones or flagstones placed around the lower edge of the burial mound to prevent erosion and protect the tomb. Also known as perimeter stones or guard stones.
