Gyeongju Bae-dong Samneung (Three Tombs)

This site is called Samneung (Three Tombs) because the tombs of the 8th King Adalla (Adalla-wang), the 53rd King Sindeok (Sindeok-wang), and the 54th King Gyeongmyeong (Gyeongmyeong-wang) of the Silla dynasty are gathered in one place. The size of King Adalla's tomb is 58m in base circumference, 5.4m in height, and 18m in diameter. When King Hyogong died without descendants, the people elevated King Sindeok (r. 912–917, Park Gyeong-hwi), the son-in-law of King Heongang. There were invasions by Gyeon Hwon and Gung Ye, and he exerted himself in battle. The tomb size is 61m in base circumference, 5.8m in height, and 18m in diameter. It was looted twice, and the interior was investigated in 1953 and 1963. The investigation revealed that the burial chamber was a stone chamber with a horizontal entrance (橫穴式石室) built with broken stones. King Gyeongmyeong (r. 917–927, Park Seung-yeong) was the son of King Sindeok. He joined forces with King Taejo Wang Geon of Goryeo to repel Gyeon Hwon's attack on Daeyaseong (大耶城). He attempted to establish diplomatic relations with Later Tang (後唐) of China but failed. The tomb size is 50m in base circumference, 4.5m in height, and 16m in diameter.
