Gujeolsan Pokpoam

경상남도 고성군 동해면 외곡1길 535

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Located in Donghae-myeon, Goseong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Gujeolsan is said to be the mountain where a Taoist hermit named Gujeol once lived, who could only be met after bowing nine times and calling out nine times. At the foot of Gujeolsan, Pokpoam was founded next to Gujeol Falls by Monk Hyeon-gak, a disciple of Seon Master Ilbong who established Ilbongsa Temple in Uiryeong. The beautiful scenery of Pokpoam, which clings tightly to the cliff, Gujeol Falls, and the suspension bridge feels mystical. As a result, Pokpoam has recently become a popular tourist attraction in Goseong.

Beside the main hall of Pokpoam, there is a golden Medicine Buddha rock carving on the cliff, and a rocking stone that has been featured in various media. A legend tells of a dragon that lived in Gujeol Falls trying to ascend to heaven but peeked at bathing women; due to this improper practice, it was struck by lightning from the sky and shattered into pieces. Its body turned into the rock mass surrounding Gujeol Falls, and its severed tail became the rocking stone.
