Gochang Mujang Donghak Peasant Revolution Uprising Site

The Donghak Peasant Revolution is a historic event in modern Korean history that first revealed the will for social reform across the nation. Gochang Mujang Uprising Site is a highly significant historical site as the starting point of the Donghak Revolution, which was also Korea's first civil rights movement. It is located in the area of Gusu Village on the left side of National Highway 22, heading from Gochang-gun toward Daesan-myeon. For reference, Mujang is a place name, and Gipoji refers to the assembly point where the Donghak Peasant Revolution proclamation was declared.

This site, created to commemorate the true meaning of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, features the grounds used as a training field for the Donghak Peasant Revolution and the [Memorial Monument for the Leader of the Gabo Donghak Peasant Army in Gochangju]. Additionally, three evergreen pine trees have been symbolically planted to represent the three leaders—Jeon Bong-jun, the supreme commander; Kim Gae-nam, the general commander; and Son Hwa-jung, the general commander—who led the Gabo Donghak Peasant Revolution, as well as the three prefectures of Gochang-hyeon, Mujang-hyeon, and Hongdeok-hyeon, which were later integrated into Gochang-gun. The Donghak Peasant Revolution memorial tower and sculptures previously installed at the original uprising site have been relocated to the former Sinhuang Elementary School as part of the Gochang Donghak Peasant Revolution Sanctification Project, so visiting both locations in conjunction is also meaningful.
