Why travelers stop here
Goesan Sadam-ri Manggae Tree Habitat is one of Korea's representative natural habitats for the manggae tree (Berchemia berchemiaefolia). Due to its high biological conservation value, it has been designated and protected as a Natural Monument. Located near Songnisan National Park, the trees grow along valleys in areas with many large rocks, little soil, and in rock crevices.
The manggae trees here were first discovered and reported by local residents, after which biology teachers from several schools conducted field surveys and confirmed the species. In 1979, members of the Cultural Heritage Committee, including Commissioner Lee Chang-bok, discovered the trees during a survey of local plant ecology and reported them to the academic community.
