Goesan Song Si-yeol Historic Site

충청북도 괴산군 청천면 화양동길 188

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The Cheongcheon Uam Song Si-yeol Historic Site consists of relics related to Song Si-yeol, centered around the Hwayang Seowon Site and the Mandongmyo Site located in Hwayangdong Valley, including Amseojae, Eupgungam, Aegaksa, and his tomb and tombstone. Hwayang Seowon was a Confucian academy built where Uam Song Si-yeol retired, serving as a gathering place for scholars during the Joseon Dynasty. Mandongmyo is a shrine dedicated to the spirit tablets of Chinese Ming Dynasty emperors Shenzong and Yizong, who sent reinforcements to Joseon during the Japanese invasions, and is well-preserved. Amseojae is known as the place where Song Si-yeol taught his disciples in his later years while living in seclusion in Hwayangdong. Eupgungam is said to be where he climbed and wept bitterly on the anniversary of King Hyojong's death after the king's passing thwarted the northern expedition. Additionally, many Aegaksa relics such as Chung Hyo Jeol Ui and Bi Rye Bu Dong are scattered throughout Hwayangdong, reflecting the nature of the site imbued with Song Si-yeol's northern expedition patriotism and national self-esteem, and showing how the site, as a center of Joseon Neo-Confucianism, was thoroughly destroyed and distorted by the Japanese colonial rule.
