Gugangseowon Confucian Academy

울산광역시 중구 서원11길 45 (반구동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This is a Confucian academy enshrining the spirit tablets of Poeun Jeong Mong-ju and Hoejae Yi Eon-jeok. It was established to cultivate scholars during the Joseon Dynasty through teaching, edification, and ancestral rites. Founded in the 4th year of King Sukjong's reign (1678), it received the royal charter name 'Gugangseowon' in the 20th year of King Sukjong's reign (1694). For about 200 years, it conducted teaching and local rites until it was abolished in the 8th year of King Gojong's reign (1871) under Heungseon Daewongun's decree to close Confucian academies. After its demolition, the site turned into a residential area. Regretting this, local Confucian scholars formed a restoration committee, purchased about 800 pyeong of the academy site, donated it to Ulsan Metropolitan City, and restored it. Currently, it operates free programs such as Chinese character classes, youth character and etiquette education, and housewife etiquette and culture lectures.
