Guryongpo Modern Culture & History Street

경상북도 포항시 남구 구룡포읍 구룡포길 153-1

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Guryongpo Modern Culture & History Street is a space that holds the tragic history of the Japanese colonial period. Once called the Japanese house street, about 300 Japanese households lived here. Fishing boats from Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, followed schools of fish and migrated to Guryongpo, and under the protection of Japanese imperialism, they amassed enormous wealth and formed a collective residential area. At that time, Guryongpo grew into a bustling area comparable to Seoul, with restaurants, bars, inns, and even a department store. The remaining 80 or so Japanese-style houses give a glimpse of how affluent their lives were. The house of Hashimoto Zenkichi, now used as the Guryongpo Modern History Museum, was lavishly decorated with construction materials imported from Japan. Recently, this street gained renewed attention as the filming location for the popular drama "When the Camellia Blooms."
