Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Located in the center of Daeyul-ri Village, Sangmaedaek faces north toward Yangjisan (Pilbong) following the mountain terrain. Daeyul-ri Traditional Village is a clan village of the Burim Hong Clan, and Sangmaedaek is the largest house in the clan. It was also known as the finest house in Uihyeong-hyeon at the time and was called "Namcheon Godaek" (南川古宅). This house was originally built about 250 years ago as a forest retreat for Utae Seonsaeng of the Burim Hong Clan. It was later passed down to the main descendants and underwent several renovations. Based on the inscription on the upper part of the sarangchae daecheong, which reads "崇禎後 上之卽位二年 丙申三月十七日 申時 竪柱 上樑" (Erected and roofed on the 17th day of the 3rd month of the Byeongsin year, at the hour of Sin, in the second year of the reign of His Majesty after the Chongzhen era), it is believed to have been built in 1836 (the 2nd year of King Heonjong's reign). Originally, the house had a unique "興" (heung) character-shaped layout, but after liberation, the middle gate building and lower building were demolished, leaving only the current form. The main gate building was relocated and its orientation was changed. Currently, it consists of a ∩-shaped inner house, a 一-shaped sarangchae, and a shrine, with natural stone walls forming the boundary around the property.<br>
