Geumyongsa Temple (Daegu)

It is said that during the mid-Goryeo period, a wealthy man built a temple on Geumbongsan Mountain (Duryusan Mountain) as a family shrine for his clan, naming it Geumbongsa Temple. In 1926 (the Byeongin year), Buddhist devotee Kim Song-dong founded the main hall and two monks' quarters at the site of the current Duryu Indoor Swimming Pool annex. In 1986, when the site of Geumyongsa Temple was incorporated into the indoor swimming pool for the National Sports Festival held in Daegu, the temple was relocated to its current location and rebuilt. The name Geumyongsa Temple was derived from a feng shui legend that, due to a natural disaster in ancient times, the phoenix of Geumbongsan Mountain transformed into a dragon; the character Geum (金) was taken from the old Geumbongsa Temple, and the character Yong (龍) was taken from the feng shui legend of the natural disaster.

The current Geumyongsa Temple is a branch temple of Donghwasa Temple, the head temple of the 9th district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, and is located within Duryu Park in Seongdang-dong, Dalseo-gu, Daegu. This temple, situated on the hillside just behind Duryu Swimming Pool, is a bhikkhuni (nun) temple with a history of approximately 100 years. The advantage of this temple is that it can be used in conjunction with the various facilities of Duryu Park.
