Why travelers stop here
Gijang Haenyeo Village is a seafood sales tent village formed around Yeonhwa Port, with 24 seafood shops in full operation. Located in Yeonhwa-ri, it is also called Yeonhwa-ri Raw Fish Village or Yeonhwa-ri Haenyeo Village. It is adjacent to Jukdo Island and has been a place where haenyeo (female divers) have sold seafood caught directly from the sea off Gijang since ancient times. Every morning, you can see seafood such as sea squirts, abalone, octopus, whelks, sea cucumbers, penis fish, and clams harvested through free diving. Abalone porridge is famous for its taste and generous portions. Additionally, a market selling Gijang marine products such as dried fish and Gijang seaweed is operated. Next to the Haenyeo Village is a private island called Jukdo, and crossing the bridge to Jukdo offers views of the ocean scenery. It is also nice to enjoy a plate of mixed seafood at a tent stall while looking at the beautiful views of Jukdo and the sea.
