Why travelers stop here
The Heo Jun Festival is held every year in the second week of October in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, where Heo Jun was born and wrote the Dongui Bogam, to commemorate his spirit of caring for the people and the greatest medical book in the East, the Dongui Bogam. Heo Jun is a revered doctor representing Korean traditional medicine. As the best physician of the Joseon Dynasty, he completed the Dongui Bogam in 25 volumes and 25 books in the 2nd year of King Gwanghaegun's reign (1610), after 14 years of referencing his experience and over 500 royal medical texts. The Dongui Bogam, which he completed after 15 years of arduous effort, is a representative Korean medical text and was inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in 2009. The Heo Jun Festival first began in 1999 around the Heogabawi area where the Dongui Bogam was written. In 2023, the festival introduced a new concept and diverse programs reflecting its identity, and moved to Seoul Botanic Park to introduce Heo Jun and Gangseo to more people and allow everyone to safely enjoy the festival.
