Nosanseong Fortress

강원특별자치도 평창군 평창읍 하리 산1

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Nosanseong Fortress was built on Noseongsan Mountain (海拔 419m), which rises prominently where the Pyeongchang River bends. It is surrounded by the river on three sides, and the north side is either a cliff or very steep, making it a naturally formidable terrain. In the "Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam" (Augmented Survey of the Geography of Korea), it is recorded as Nosanseong, described as 'built with stone, with a circumference of 1,364 cheok and a height of 4 cheok. There is one well inside. Now half of it has collapsed.' The fortress is said to have been built by Magistrate Kim Gwang-bok in the early years of King Seonjo of the Joseon Dynasty. During the Imjin War (Japanese invasions of 1592-1598), Magistrate Gwon Du-mun, along with Ji Sa-ham, U Eung-min, and Yi In-no, is known to have led the people here to fight against the Japanese forces. The fortress has a perimeter of 517m, and although the walls have largely collapsed, some sections remain up to 5.3m in height. The walls were constructed only in areas excluding the northern cliff, where the ground just below the ridge was cut away and the wall was built on the outside, creating a flat inner circuit road along the wall. Among the facilities inside the fortress, there is one well site near the summit, approximately 2m deep.
