Yudong-ri Five-story Stone Pagoda

강원특별자치도 평창군 평창읍 유동리 산1

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The Five-story Stone Pagoda in Yudong-ri is a structure built with five stories of the pagoda body on a single-story base. With a fairly large base platform and the moderately proportioned roof stones and body stones above it being thin and flat, the pagoda overall conveys a sense of stability and light elegance. Lotus flowers are carved on the upper surfaces of the base's lower and top stones. Pillar shapes are carved on the four corners, a goblin face is carved on the north side, an unidentified shape is carved on the west side, and a niche (a chamber for enshrining a Buddhist statue) is hollowed out on the south side. Except for the first-story body stone and the fifth-story roof stone, all roof stones are carved from a single stone with the body stone of the upper story. Pillar shapes are carved on the body stones of each story, and in particular, a door shape and a lock are carved on the south side of the first-story body stone. The thick roof stones have steep water-shedding surfaces, sharply upturned corners, and three-tiered supports on the undersides. At the top, a later-period lotus bud-shaped finial is placed. Overall, compared to the first-story body stone, the second-story body stone decreases sharply in size, while the upper stories show little reduction, suggesting that the pagoda was built during the Goryeo Dynasty.
