Neungganggyegok Valley, Eoreumgol Valley

충청북도 제천시 수산면 능강리 산30-4

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Neunggang Valley is located at a high altitude and is blocked from north to south, resulting in short periods of sunlight throughout the day. In winter, the rocks become cold and the water freezes, so ice forms even during the hottest summer days, hence it is called 'Ice Valley' or 'Hanyangji'. The most ice appears during Chobok (the first of the three hottest periods), ice is found in rock crevices during Jungbok (the middle period), and during Malbok (the last period), the ice must be dug out from under rocks. Eating this ice is said to be a cure-all, attracting many summer visitors. The water originating from Hanyangji flows through Neunggang Valley, winding through a forest of green pines with cool and clear streams. Some parts of the valley are flanked by rock walls like folding screens, creating a dreamlike atmosphere, and the water flows for about 20 ri (approximately 8 km) before entering Cheongpung Lake. On the left ridge of the valley, there is Jeongbangsa Temple, founded by Monk Uisang during the reign of King Munmu of Silla, offering a view of Cheongpung Lake below the mountain temple. Heading from Ice Valley toward Cheongpung-myeon, you will encounter the wide and refreshing Cheongpung Lake shore.
