Daeheung Hyanggyo

Hyanggyo were national educational institutions of the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties, established to enshrine and conduct rituals for Confucius and eminent Confucian scholars, as well as to educate and enlighten local residents. During the Joseon period, they received land and servants from the state, and instructors taught students. However, with the Gabo Reform of 1894, modern education was fully introduced, and their educational function was abolished.

Daeheung Hyanggyo is a hyanggyo located near Yesan Yedang Reservoir and Daeheung Slow City. It was first built about 50 meters north of its current location in 1405 (the 5th year of King Taejong) and was moved to its present site in 1591 (the 24th year of King Seonjo). Since then, it has undergone several repairs, renovations, and changes over time. Currently, the site includes buildings such as Myeongnyundang, Daeseongjeon, Dongjae, Seojae, Sujiksa, and Jeongyosil. In 1997, it was recognized for its value and designated as a Chungcheongnam-do Monument. In front of the hyanggyo stands a giant ginkgo tree over 500 years old, which uniquely has had a zelkova tree growing from its middle section for about 150 years, becoming one body. Rituals praying for the village's well-being are held under this tree overlooking the hyanggyo.
