Yangyang Hyanggyo

A local Confucian school from the Goryeo Dynasty located in Imcheon-ri, Yangyang-eup, Yangyang-gun. It was designated as Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Cultural Heritage Material on January 17, 1985. During the Joseon Dynasty, it received land and slaves from the state, and instructors taught 70 students, but after the Gabo Reform, its educational function ceased and only the ritual function remained. It was founded during the reign of King Chunghye of Goryeo for the education and enlightenment of local residents. After several renovations during the Joseon Dynasty, it was moved to its current location in 1682 by Busa Choi Sang-ik. With a long history, Yangyang Hyanggyo preserved many national treasure-level calligraphic works, paintings, and sculptures, but they were destroyed by fire during the Korean War. In 1952, Daeseongjeon, Dongjae, and Seojae were rebuilt, and Myeongnyundang was reconstructed the following year. In 1954, the Hyanggyo Foundation established Myeongnyun Middle School, contributing to secondary education in Yangyang-gun. The school was reorganized as a technical school in 1970 and closed in 1975. Existing buildings include Daeseongjeon, Myeongnyundang, Dongjae, and Seojae. Daeseongjeon enshrines the spirit tablets of the Five Sages, Ten Philosophers, and Six Masters of the Song Dynasty, while Dongmu and Seomu enshrine the spirit tablets of 18 Korean sages.
