Jecheon Deokjusa Maaeyeoraeipsang

Deokjusa Temple is a temple said to have been built by Princess Deokju, the sister of Prince Maui, the last prince of the Silla Dynasty. Deokjusa Temple is located on the southern foot of Woraksan Mountain, and the hermitage is divided into two parts, called Sangdeokjusa and Hadeokjusa. Sangdeokjusa, where the Jecheon Deokjusa Temple Rock-carved Standing Buddha is located, was burned down during the Korean War, and now only the site of the Dharma hall in front of the Jecheon Deokjusa Temple Rock-carved Standing Buddha can be identified. Following the hiking trail to Mansubong Peak of Woraksan Mountain for about an hour, there is a site with high stone walls built near the summit, and in front of it, a rock-carved standing Buddha is carved on a huge flat rock face. The height is as much as 13 meters, and while the face part protrudes prominently, the body is only carved with lines. The exaggerated expression of the face is a technique commonly seen in large Buddhist statues of the Goryeo Dynasty. The body part carved with lines shows a distorted expression method that does not preserve the formative characteristics of the human body. It appears to have been made under the trend of creating large Buddhist statues in the early Goryeo Dynasty. The plump face, the simplified sculptural technique toward the lower body, and the flat body are the main characteristics of Buddhist statues of that time.
