Dogye Seowon

Seowon were private educational institutions established by local Confucian scholars from the mid-Joseon period onward to study academics and hold memorial rites for distinguished Confucian scholars. Dogye Seowon is a seowon founded in 1673 (the 14th year of King Heonjong) in Dogye-ri, Ipyong-myeon, Jeongeup-si. It was demolished in 1868 (the 5th year of King Gojong) and rebuilt in 1962. After the seowon was abolished, it continued to exist as a practical shrine. It enshrines Yi Hui-maeng, Kim Je-min, Kim Je-an, Choe An, Kim Heun, Kim Seom, Kim Seup, and Kim Ji-su. The shrine buildings include Dogye Seowon, which was originally the study hall of Obong Kim Jae-min, and a relic hall. The relic hall houses 13 woodblocks of Obong's literary collection and 30 woodblocks of Taecheon's collection. The Obong Collection was published at Dogye Seowon in 1684 (the 10th year of King Sukjong). The memorial rite is held on the middle day of the 9th month of the lunar calendar each year. Near Dogye Seowon are Eonseon-ri Ancient Tombs, Jeongeup Eonseon-ri Three-Story Stone Pagoda, Baekunam Stone Standing Buddha, Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Hall, and Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Park.
