Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Located in Jeongsang-dong, east of Samcheok-si, this area was once an island and was called Jukgwan-do, and is now also referred to as Yukhyangdae. During the Joseon Dynasty, Samcheokpo Fortress, which oversaw nine counties on the east coast as well as Ulleungdo and Dokdo, was located here, and there was a Pyeongsuchanbi Monument commemorating the achievements of Heo Mok, a scholar and politician of the Joseon Dynasty. Currently, on the mountain peak stand the Cheokju Donghaebi Monument, the Pyeongsuchanbi Monument, and Yukhyangjeong Pavilion. These monuments were erected in the 2nd year of King Hyeonjong of Joseon (1661) by Samcheok Magistrate Heo Mok. This place is also famous for hosting the 'Samcheokpo Garrison Commander Memorial Ritual and Yukhyang Cultural Festival' held annually to honor the spirits of the commanders of the Samcheokpo Garrison who guarded maritime safety and the East Sea, and to pray for bountiful catches for fishermen. Nearby tourist attractions around Yukhyangsan Mountain include Saecheonnyeon Beach Resort, Expo Town, Haesindang Park, and the Freshwater Fish Exhibition Hall.
