Site of Haegasa Temple

Imhaejeong Pavilion, the site of Haegasa Temple, was restored based on the tale of "Haega" (Song of the Sea) from the Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) in the story of Surobuin. The exact location is not known from literature, but it is presumed to have been at the end of Wausan Mountain north of Samcheok Beach. However, since the original site is now a military protection zone and cannot be developed, it was built on the adjacent scenic beach area in Jeungsan-dong. The beaches to the left and right of Imhaejeong Pavilion are spectacular, and it is the only pavilion in Samcheok-si that faces the sea. According to the tale, during the reign of King Seongdeok of Silla, when Duke Sunjeong was on his way to assume the post of Gangneung governor, he was having lunch at a place called Imhaejeong when suddenly a dragon from the sea appeared and dragged his wife into the sea. The husband, Duke Sunjeong, mobilized the villagers to beat the hill with sticks and composed a song called "Haega" (Song of the Sea), upon which the dragon returned Surobuin. Imhaejeong Pavilion and a monument to Haegasa Temple were restored based on the tale, and Surobuin Park and a parking lot were created nearby. In April 2006, the Love's Yeouiju Dragon Ball was installed, making it a popular tourist attraction for love and wishes. It is also famous as a photo spot offering the most beautiful view of Chuweon Beach, a renowned sunrise spot on the East Sea.
