Why travelers stop here
About 200 meters north of Uisangdae, on the coast, stands Hongnyeonam Hermitage. This is the sacred site where Master Uisang personally beheld the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, and it is the place that became the foundation for the founding of Naksansa Temple. Hongnyeonam is a hermitage belonging to Naksansa Temple, built on a cliff, with the sea water visible surging below the floor of the main hall. According to legend, while Master Uisang was sitting in meditation here for seven days, a red lotus rose from the sea, and from within that flower, the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara appeared and bestowed the joy of the Dharma upon the master. This mysterious experience became the impetus for the founding of Naksansa Temple, and Hongnyeonam has since been established as a sacred site of Avalokitesvara faith.
