Deunggeul Cave

Deunggeul Cave is an underground air-raid shelter built during the Japanese colonial period. It is about 2 meters wide and 30 meters long, and is said to have been used as an arsenal and gunpowder storage. In the 1940s, an air-raid shelter was constructed under Gwangju Sajik Park to evacuate Japanese residents living in downtown Gwangju from American air raids. Because it was close to the Japanese residential area and the ground of Yangnim Mountain was solid, providing stable evacuation, the Japanese planned to build four entrances with a central square when constructing the shelter. However, due to the hard granite ground, construction progress was slow, and the war ended before it could be completed. Currently, it operates as a modern historical and cultural heritage site, a remnant of the Japanese colonial period. Nearby are Yangnim-dong History and Culture Village, the Acoustic Guitar Live Cafe Street, and others.
