Pochungsa Shrine is a shrine built in the 7th year of King Hyeonjong's reign to honor the martial achievements and loyalty of General Kim Eung-ha (Chungmugong), who was dispatched as the left army commander of the Joseon reinforcement forces to suppress the rebellion of the Jurchen Jianzhou Wei in the 11th year of King Gwanghaegun's reign. He fought valiantly against 60,000 enemy troops with 3,000 soldiers and died heroically at the age of 40. Originally located in Yeokchon-dong, Hwajeon-ri, Cheorwon-eup, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, it was destroyed during the Korean War and, being in a military-controlled area, was rebuilt in 1990 at the foot of Gokamsan Mountain, San 1-1, Hwaji-ri, Cheorwon-eup.
In the 7th year of King Hyeonjong's reign, a shrine with 30 kan (a unit of measurement for building size) was built at the foot of Ilbongsan Mountain in Hwajeon-ri, Nam 4-ri of the prefecture (Yeokchon-dong), and in the 9th year of King Hyeonjong's reign, it was given the name 'Pochungsa' by royal decree. In the 10th year of King Hyeonjong's reign, Emperor Shenzong of the Ming Dynasty posthumously conferred the title of 'Yodong Baek' (Count of Liaodong) on General Kim, and in June of the same year, the Joseon court produced a monument inscription. In the 9th year of King Sukjong's reign, Song Si-yeol composed the text, Park Tae-ung wrote the calligraphy, and Yeonguijeong (Chief State Councillor) Kim Su-hang wrote the title in seal script, and this monument for General Kim Eung-ha was erected within the shrine.
