Hwaro Gui Golmok (Grilled Meat Alley)

Entering Yangjimal Village in Hongcheon-eup, Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon-do, the delicious smell of marinated meat grilling fills the entire area. Hwaro Gui Golmok, with about 20 restaurants clustered together, is located on the way to Seoraksan Mountain and is famous nationwide for its unique marinade flavor. On weekends and holidays, every restaurant is packed, and it is said that up to 1 million tourists visit each year, rivaling many popular tourist attractions. The alley's hwaro gui (grilled meat) uses pork marinated in a special sauce made with gochujang (red chili paste), doenjang (soybean paste), and honey, then grilled over oak charcoal in traditional cast-iron braziers, eliminating any unpleasant odor. Each restaurant adds its own secret touch to enhance the flavor, and it is especially delicious when enjoyed with Hongcheon deodeok (codonopsis). Nearby attractions include Daemyung Ski Resort, Hongcheon Hot Springs, Hongcheon River Recreation Area, and Palbong Mountain, making it a great stop on a combined tour route.
