Mannoe-sa Shrine

Mannoe-sa is a shrine dedicated to the spirit of Jo Gam, located at the foot of the mountain behind Gangdang Village in Jincheon-gun. Jo Gam was a righteous army commander during the Byeongja Horan (Manchu invasion of 1636). At Mannoseong Fortress, together with Yu Chang-guk, he led thousands of wandering refugees who had no commander and repelled foreign invaders who had breached the fortress. After his death, Jo Gam was posthumously appointed as Minister of Rites (Yejo Panseo), and his descendants have continued to honor his achievements. In the 2nd year of King Cheoljong's reign, Jukgye-sa Shrine was established in Baekgok-myeon to enshrine Jo Gam alongside General Kim Yu-sin, but it was demolished during the reign of King Gojong under the Seowon Cheolpyeong-ryeong (order to abolish private Confucian academies). After liberation, Jo Gam was again enshrined at Gilsang-sa Temple in 1949, and in 1961, through the efforts of his descendants and local Confucian scholars, Mannoe-sa was newly built and dedicated. Mannoe-sa is a wooden, tiled building with a hip-and-gable roof (pajakjibung) featuring double eaves, measuring 3 kan (bays) in front and 1.5 kan on the sides. A plaque reading 'Mannoe-sa' hangs at the front. In front stands a three-door gate with a gable roof (matbaejibung), surrounded by a wall made of a mixture of stone and earth, topped with roof tiles. The shrine is located on a high spot visible as soon as one enters the village. It is managed by the village, so the surroundings are well-maintained and the preservation condition is relatively good. However, the access road is narrow, making it somewhat inconvenient to approach by private car.
