Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Mangisanseong Fortress is a mountain fortress built during the Three Kingdoms period, constructed by stacking walls along the low ridge north of the summit of Mangisan Mountain, which is 472 meters above sea level. To the south, it overlooks Samseong-myeon, Eumseong-gun, and the fields of Jincheon-gun in the distance, making it a strategic military location. An inner fortress was built with earth around the mountain summit, and an outer fortress was built using stones along the ridge for about 2 kilometers. Inside the inner fortress, a square beacon fire station was erected. This beacon was connected to those at Jukgan Geonjisan, Jincheon Soeulsan, and Eumseong Gayeopsan. The existence of Mangisanseong Fortress is recorded in the Sejong Sillok Jiriji and the Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam, and it is an important relic of the Three Kingdoms period, rare among mountain fortresses for being composed of both inner and outer fortifications. It is presumed to be a Goguryeo fortress, but various artifacts from the late Bronze Age through the Baekje, Unified Silla, Goryeo, and Joseon periods have been excavated within the fortress. Notably, a roof tile from 963 was discovered, providing important material for the study of roof tiles made in the late Unified Silla and early Goryeo periods.
