Why travelers stop here
Donggang River is a river located in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do, and is considered one of the most beautiful rivers in Korea. The river originates from Odaesan Mountain in Pyeongchang-gun, passes through Jeongseon, and meets Seogang River in Yeongwol-gun, flowing into the upper reaches of the Namhangang River. Because the river splits and merges many times, its length varies from 51 km to 65 km depending on the source. Donggang boasts natural scenery where dense forests, clear water, and奇特 rocks harmonize. Its natural environment is well preserved, making it known as a treasure trove of ecosystems, home to various endangered species such as otters, Korean spotted sleeper (어름치), and Korean shiner (쉬리). For this reason, Donggang was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2002.
Donggang offers various leisure sports such as rafting, kayaking, swimming, hiking, and trekking. In particular, Donggang rafting, which starts from Joyanggang River, the upper stream of Donggang, is one of the most popular rafting courses in Korea. Around Donggang, there are abundant facilities for relaxation and leisure. Along the riverside, there are parks where visitors can enjoy picnics or barbecues, and walking trails along the river. There are also many accommodations and restaurants nearby, allowing visitors to enjoy leisure sports and then relax and visit famous local restaurants. In addition, Donggang Observatory Natural Recreation Forest is located at an altitude of 600m, offering spectacular views of Donggang and Baegunsan Mountain.
