Maehwasan (Gangwon)

* The Mountain Where Immortals Lived, Maehwasan (Gangwon) * Maehwasan is a fairly high peak at 1,085m. From the summit, the ridge extends southwest and merges with Birobong of Chiaksan, while facing Baekdeoksan to the east. In contrast to Chiaksan, it boasts a subtle feminine beauty. It is said that immortals once lived here, so locals still call it Sinseonbong (Immortal Peak). Surrounding peaks include Chiaksan (Birobong: 1,228m), Namdaebong (1,182m), Baehyangsan (808m), and Satgatbong (1,030m). On the northern foot lies Owon Reservoir, and the southern slope is the source of Jucheongang River. On the western foot, there are scenic spots such as Guryongsa Temple and Guryong Falls, as well as a youth training center, attracting many tourists. The Yeongdong Expressway passes along the northern foot, the Jungang Expressway passes along the western foot, and city buses run between Wonju and Anheung-ri, making transportation convenient.

* Precautions for Using Maehwasan * Maehwasan is part of Chiaksan National Park, an area with no legal hiking trails and is prohibited from entry year-round. Special judicial police of the national park enforce crackdowns on unauthorized entrants. Penalties for unauthorized entry impose a fine of 500,000 won under Article 28 of the Natural Parks Act, and if unauthorized entrants collect wild greens, they face imprisonment of up to 3 years or a fine of up to 30 million won under Article 23 of the Natural Parks Act.
