Mokcheon Hyanggyo

Mokcheon Hyanggyo was established in 1523 (the 18th year of King Jungjong's reign) to enshrine and honor the spirit tablets of Confucian sages, and to provide education and moral cultivation for local residents. The subsequent history of the hyanggyo is not well-documented. The Daeseongjeon (main shrine) houses the spirit tablets of the Five Sages, while the Dongmu (East Shrine) and Seomu (West Shrine) enshrine the Four Masters of the Song Dynasty and the Eighteen Sages of Korea. During the Joseon Dynasty, the state provided land, books, and slaves, and instructors taught a quota of 30 students. However, after the Gabo Reform, the implementation of a new educational system led to the loss of its educational function, and now only spring and autumn rituals (Seokjeon) are performed. Currently, the Daeseongjeon is designated as a Cultural Heritage Material of Chungcheongnam-do, and one headmaster (Jeongyo) and several stewards (Jangui) are responsible for its operation.
