Mugaksa Temple

Located on Yeouisan Mountain in Seo-gu, Gwangju, Mugaksa Temple is a temple of practice and cultural space in the city center, serving as the Yeoui Pure Land leading not only Gwangju but also Honam Buddhism. Mugaksa Temple was founded in 1971 by the great monk Gusan of Songgwangsa Temple, gathering the strength of local Buddhists, and has played a significant role as a spiritual refuge for the patriotic spirit and Buddhist practice of the soldiers of Sangmudae (Combat Training Command). When Sangmudae, which was a training area for soldiers until the early 1990s, moved to the Jangseong area, Mugaksa Temple gained attention as a temple of practice in the city center, and since Monk Cheonghak took office in 2007, it has undergone full-scale development. Currently, Mugaksa Temple operates day-type temple stays and experiential temple stays, attracting a continuous flow of visitors.
